Common Questions

PRODUCT FAQ

What kind of wax do you use?
All of our candles are made with 100% soy wax, which is an all-natural, American-grown, clean-burning alternative to synthetics like paraffin which are, well, kind of gross.

What about the wicks?
100% cotton! No weird metal hiding in our wicks.

What do you use to create the scents?
Our candles are all infused with a blend of fine fragrance oils + pure essential oils. When considering fragrance, the big bad wolf to always look out for is phthalates. This additive is a gross one, and you can rest easy knowing our candles never contain them.

I'm looking for a bulk order. Can you help?
Oh, this is our jam! Shoot an email to info@standardwax.com. Let us know your vision for the vessels, labels, scent and quantity, along with your timeline, and we'll get a quote together just for you. We love working on corporate gifts, private label candles, wedding favors and anything else you can dream up. Learn more about the process, pricing and more here.

What are your scents like? How can I know which scent is right for me?
Our scents are a pretty far cry from the in-your-face, Yankee Candle type fragrances. They're subtle, but will still make your space smell great.

If you want to try our scents before committing to full candles, take a look at The Scent Kit! You'll get samples of all of our fragrances and a gift card to use toward your favorites!

How much is shipping?
If your order is $50 or more, shipping is on us! For orders under $50, we offer $8 flat rate shipping. We know it can be hard to stomach in the age of Amazon, but our shipping costs are $8-20 per order and as a small business, it's simply not sustainable to offer free shipping on all orders.

CANDLE BURNING FAQ

What is a melt pool?
The melt pool is the layer of melted wax that's created each time you burn a candle. Make sure it extends to the edges of the container before blowing out your candle to get the most burn time out of each Standard Wax candle.

I've heard I need to trim the wick. Why?
Yes! Always trim the wick to about 1/4" before lighting your candle. This will keep the candle from smoking and and will allow it to burn it's best. A wick that's too long or too short will cause some crazy-weird things to happen, and no one has time for that.

My candle isn't burning to the edge of the container! How do I stop wasting this precious wax?
The first burn is the most important! When you bring your new candle home and light it for the first time, make sure you'll be around for a while. Light the candle, and let it burn in a draft-free area until the pool of melted wax reaches the edges of the container. This can take up to three hours, so be patient! If you don't allow the candle to burn to the edges on the first burn, it most likely won't ever get there on future burns. If for any reason the wick becomes off-center while burning, always be sure to blow it out and recenter before the wax dries.

When is it time to repurpose my candle?
When only a half inch of wax remains, it's time to give that candle a new life! Don't burn a candle with less than a half inch of wax remaining, that's not safe.

Use a spoon to scoop out the remaining wax and wick, and wipe out any excess wax using a small rag. Feel free to wash the container with warm water, too. A dab of rubbing alcohol can go a long way in removing greasy residue.

Now the fun part. Fill your empty Standard Wax container with your favorite potted plant or succulent, toothbrushes or makeup brushes in the bathroom, pens and pencils on your desk... You've created something really cool. Don't let it go to waste!
